Emotional Regulation

Emotional regulation is closely linked to how we process sensory information, recognise our internal body signals and respond to the demands of everyday life. From an occupational therapy perspective, we consider how sensory processing, emotional awareness, environmental demands and daily occupations interact to influence our ability to feel regulated and participate meaningfully in everyday activities.

By identifying individual needs and exploring practical, sensory-informed strategies, we can support regulation, build confidence and make everyday experiences at home, school, work and in the community feel more manageable.

We can support children to:

  • Identify their internal feelings and physical 'clues' that they are becoming dysregulated.
  • Develop a 'sensory toolkit' of strategies to help them stay regulated during the school day.
  • Build self-advocacy skills so they can communicate their needs to adults.
  • Understand the relationship between their environment and their big emotions.

How we can support?

We can support adults to:

  • Understand their own sensory profile and how it impacts their regulation.
  • Manage burnout and sensory overload in the workplace or home.
  • Implement practical strategies to navigate stressful transitions and high-demand tasks.
  • Foster self-compassion and understanding of their neurodivergent identity.
