Are you just a horse-based or outdoor service?

Not at all! While horses and the outdoors remain an important part of Maverick Therapies, our services and team have grown to offer much more.

We now provide a wider range of Occupational Therapy services, covering all areas of OT, alongside our specialist outdoor and equine-assisted approaches.

Our aim is to make Occupational Therapy and therapeutic support more accessible to our community, offering flexible, individualised support in a variety of settings. Whether that's at home, in school, in the community or alongside our horses, we want to provide the right support in the right environment for each individual.

What is Equine-Assisted Occupational Therapy?

Equine-Assisted Occupational Therapy brings together Occupational Therapy and meaningful experiences alongside horses.

Working with horses can offer opportunities to develop communication, confidence, emotional awareness, sensory processing, motor skills and practical life skills.

Sessions are guided by individual goals and take place at a pace suited to the person. No previous horse experience is needed.

Do you offer horse riding?

No. Our equine-assisted sessions are entirely ground-based and do not involve riding.

Instead, we focus on the relationship and connection between people and horses, using meaningful activities and experiences to support confidence, communication, emotional awareness, sensory experiences and personal growth.

Sessions are guided by individual needs and therapeutic goals, with opportunities for observation, interaction, horse care and reflective activities.

I'm nervous or scared of horses. Can I still take part?

Absolutely! You do not need to love horses, have previous experience or even feel comfortable being close to them to benefit from our outdoor sessions.

We can start from a distance, allowing you to simply observe, enjoy the outdoor environment and become familiar with the horses at your own pace.

Sessions might involve mindfulness, connecting with nature, quiet observation or gradually exploring interaction with the horses if and when you feel ready.

What are the benefits of outdoor Occupational Therapy?

For some individuals, working outdoors can offer opportunities that may be harder to achieve in a traditional clinic-based environment. Nature provides a rich, varied and multisensory environment where everyday experiences become meaningful opportunities for learning and development.

At Maverick Therapies, we use the natural environment to support a wide range of Occupational Therapy goals, from sensory processing, emotional regulation and motor skills to communication, confidence, independence and everyday life skills.

Whether gardening, navigating natural obstacles, climbing, balancing, using hammocks, exploring nature or engaging in practical activities, there are countless opportunities to develop skills through real, hands-on experiences.

We also believe in the importance of discovering enjoyable hobbies and interests. Developing skills through activities that someone genuinely enjoys can help build confidence, encourage independence and create opportunities for meaningful participation beyond therapy.

Our approach is about making therapy purposeful, enjoyable and relevant to everyday life, helping individuals develop skills in environments where they can feel comfortable, motivated and engaged.

Do you provide nature-based therapy?

Yes. We recognise the many opportunities that outdoor environments can offer for learning, development and wellbeing.

Nature-based sessions may involve movement, exploration, practical activities, problem-solving and opportunities to develop confidence and everyday skills.

What is Alternative Provision?

Our Alternative Provision offers individualised therapeutic support and alternative learning experiences for children and young people who may find traditional educational environments challenging.

We aim to provide meaningful opportunities to develop confidence, emotional wellbeing, independence, practical skills and engagement with learning.

Do you offer mentoring and coaching?

Yes. Our therapeutic mentoring and coaching can support individuals to build confidence, develop independence, explore interests, manage everyday challenges and work towards personal goals.

Our approach is flexible and shaped around the individual.

Where do sessions take place?

We offer support across a range of environments, depending on the service and individual needs.

This may include:

  • At home

  • In schools and educational settings

  • In the community

  • Outdoors and in nature

  • Alongside our horses

  • In other suitable therapeutic environments

We believe the environment can play an important part in making support meaningful and accessible.

Do you provide school visits?

Yes. We work with schools and educational settings to provide individual Occupational Therapy support, observations, assessments, recommendations and advice.

We can also offer wider therapeutic support and Alternative Provision, depending on individual requirements.

Do you provide reports and recommendations?

Yes. We can provide Occupational Therapy assessment reports, practical recommendations and advice to support individuals, families and professionals.

Where appropriate, this may include recommendations relating to home, education, daily living and participation.

Do you provide NHS services?

Maverick Therapies is an independent, private service and is not part of the NHS.

If you are looking for NHS Occupational Therapy, we recommend contacting your GP or local NHS service for information about available pathways.

How do I make a referral?

You can contact us directly at mavericktherapies@gmail.com to discuss your needs or the needs of someone you support.

We will be happy to talk through the services available and help identify the most appropriate support.

How much do sessions cost?

Costs vary depending on the type of service, level of support required and location.

Please contact us to discuss your requirements and we can provide further information about fees.

Do you need a diagnosis to access Occupational Therapy?

No. You do not need a formal diagnosis to access our services. We focus on understanding the individual's strengths, needs and the barriers they may be experiencing, rather than simply focusing on diagnostic labels.

Do you diagnose Autism or ADHD?

No. We do not provide diagnostic assessments for Autism or ADHD. However, we can provide Occupational Therapy assessments and support to explore how an individual's needs and differences impact everyday life.

Do you provide sensory assessments?

Yes. Our Occupational Therapy assessments can explore sensory processing differences and how these may affect everyday activities, emotional regulation, participation and wellbeing.

We also consider other areas, including motor skills, coordination, self-care, cognition and daily living skills.

What is neurodiversity-affirming practice?

A neurodiversity-affirming approach recognises and respects the natural differences in how people think, learn, communicate, experience the world and process sensory information.

Rather than trying to make everyone fit the same expectations, we aim to understand each individual's needs, celebrate their strengths and provide support that helps them feel comfortable, confident and able to participate in their own way.

What is trauma-informed support?

Trauma-informed practice recognises that past experiences can influence how someone feels, responds and engages with the world around them.

We aim to provide safe, supportive and predictable experiences, building trust and relationships at a pace that feels right for the individual.
